Barbara Windom

It is with a heavy heart that we share with you that Barbara Windom has passed away suddenly. She was the daughter of Edie Mayer Goetz and Bill Goetz, sister to Judith Shepherd Goetz, mother to Maggie Clare, Debora Clare, and Rachel Windom Stengel, loved mother-in-law to their partners, and grandmother to beautiful granddaughters. Barbara was the loving aunt of Tony Shepherd, Scott Shepherd and Victoria Shepherd Bleeden. She was the beloved long-time partner of poet Victor di Suvero and loved by his family. She was the remaining first cousin of Daniel Mayer Selznick.

Barbara’s family extended to those who worked with her at her historic ranch, La Estancia Alegre in Alcalde, New Mexico, where she bred rare and prized Peruvian Paso horses. She will be missed deeply by a wide circle of friends and colleagues who shared her passion for horses.

Barbara traveled to Oklahoma City for an annual horse championships where she experienced a sudden medical emergency. She passed away some hours later surrounded by her family who traveled to be by her side, and dear friends who had traveled with her.

Barbara was probably one of the most gracious ladies I have ever know. It was a privilege to be able to call her friend. She will be missed by many as she had been loved by those close to her. As a friend I can’t express how much I will miss her.

So Very sorry for the family’s loss. The Peruvian world here will miss her Very much. She was a great promoter of the Peruvian Horse and a gracious host during her Weekend With Horses.

I will paraphrase and say that Barbara was one of the most beautiful human beings I have ever met and her passing certainly diminishes me because humankind suffers greatly with her gone.
My sincere condolences to the family.

In addition to her contribution to the horse world, we will miss her tomato sandwiches, her love of art and antiques and design, and her ability to put together divergent friends who became ‘new’ friends to us all.

It is difficult to believe that Barbara is gone and she will be deeply missed by her many, many friends. We send our sympathy to her family and all who loved her. There was a small trail ride at La Estancia Alegre this morning in her memory.
