INSTRUCTIONS TO REGISTER A MALE ("T" NUMBERED HORSE) AS A BREEDING STALLION ("S" NUMBERED HORSE)
While PPHRNA Certificates do not show the gender of a horse as a letter preceding the registration number, the stud book and other listings DO use the initials M for mare, G for gelding, S for stallion (registered for breeding purposes) and T (male not registered for breeding purposes). Effective January 1, 1984, all ungelded males newly registered or transferred to the PPHRNA must be specifically registered for breeding purposes. In order to register a male for breeding purposes in the PPHRNA you should first send to the Registry office the male's original PPHRNA certificate of registration, the $100 fee and a note stating that you wish to register him for breeding. The Registry will then send you a kit for the DNA typing required (complete with instructions, forms and package for shipping to UC Davis), a statement form on descended testicles for a licensed veterinarian to completed and a Witness Statement (on the collection of the DNA.) The $125 fee to the Registry includes the cost of the DNA typing work at Davis so you need send no money with the samples (but it is vital that you do send the PPHRNA DNA form to Davis with the samples.) The Witness Statement on the collection of the DNA sample must be returned with the Vet Statement on descended testicles to the PPHRNA. Once the University sends the PPHRNA the results of your stallion's DNA type and the office has received the veterinarian's statement on descended testicles and the Witness Statement, the Registrar will change your horses's status to "S" and issue a new certificate. [Note: Any ungelded male registered with the PPHRNA prior to registration number # 4045 is considered eligible for use as a breeding stallion without the above requirements. (Please note: most stallions registered for breeding prior to January 1995 were blood typed. Starting in 1995, DNA typing will be required. ALL stallions used for A.I., Shipped Fresh or Frozen Semen or Embryo Transfer programs MUST have their DNA type on file prior to their use in such programs and the PPHRNA strongly suggests that all stallions used for breeding have their DNA types on file.] [NOTE FOR STALLIONS ALREADY REGISTERED FOR BREEDING WITH THE AAOBPPH: If your stallion's DNA type has already been determined by UC Davis, you need not re-type him. The PPHRNA will accept a clear copy of the DNA typing results from either UC Davis, the owner or the AAOBPPH. You may request the results from Davis by sending your horse's name and number to: Veterinary Genetics Laboratory, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis, CA 95616. (Call Davis for current fee.) In addition, the PPHRNA will accept copies from the AAOBPPH of veterinary statements on descended testicles. Please note that the fee for registering such stallions for breeding is $125.PPHRNA * 3077 Wiljan Court, Ste. A, Santa Rosa, CA 95407 * (707) 579-4394
